105D31 vs 115D31 battery: same D31 case, two power grades
The 105D31 and 115D31 share the same physical case — the JIS D31, the largest of the standard Japanese passenger/light-truck boxes. The difference is electrical: the 115D31 is the higher performance grade of the same box, with more capacity and a higher cold-cranking rating.

What the model code actually means
The JIS code breaks down as [performance class][case class][length], exactly like the smaller D26 family:
- 105 / 115 — the performance class, which correlates roughly with capacity (Ah) and CCA. A higher number means a higher electrical grade, not a physically larger battery.
- D — the case-size class (width and height). Both batteries are “D”.
- 31 — the length in centimetres, roughly 305 mm. This is the part most people miss: D31 is not the same tray as D26.
The D31 box sits at the top of the standard JIS passenger ladder — D23 (232 mm) → D26 (256 mm) → D31 (305 mm). The extra length over a D26 is where the extra plate area and, therefore, the higher Ah and CCA come from. If a vehicle is specced for a D26, a D31 will usually not fit the tray, even though all three are “D” width and height.
Are they interchangeable?
Physically, yes — the 105D31 and 115D31 occupy the same D31 tray and the same hold-down footprint, so either one drops into a vehicle built for a D31 battery.
Three things must still be confirmed before treating them as replacements:
- Terminal type and polarity. D31 batteries come in left/right variants (e.g.
105D31Lvs105D31R) and with different terminal styles. Same case ≠ same terminals. - Reserve fit for the load. A 105D31 in an application engineered for a 115D31 will still start, but it will cycle deeper under winching, sustained accessory or marine house-load demand and wear faster.
- CCA basis. Confirm whether the quoted CCA is JIS (−15°C) or SAE/EN (−18°C). They are not the same number for the same battery.
Why the CCA numbers look different across brands
You will see 105D31 CCA figures from roughly 670 up to 700, and capacity from about 83 to 90 Ah, depending on the source. This is not usually a contradiction — it is two effects at once:
- Test method. JIS measures at −15°C; SAE/EN measure at −18°C. The same battery produces different numbers under the two standards.
- Manufacturer grade. Different factories fill the D31 case to different plate-count and paste specifications, so the “105” class has a legitimate performance spread. A high-grade 105D31 from one factory can sit close to a low-grade 115D31 from another.
The practical rule: compare CCA within one standard, and compare grade-to-grade within one manufacturer. Comparing one brand’s 105D31 against another brand’s 115D31 tells you more about the factory than about the model code. Read more in the CCA guide and the JIS vs DIN vs BCI explanation.
Which one should you choose?
| Choose… | When… |
|---|---|
| 105D31 | Standard SUV, 4WD and light-commercial diesel vehicles with moderate accessory load; cost-sensitive replacement programs; markets where 84 Ah is the OEM baseline. |
| 115D31 | Heavy SUVs, 4WDs with winches or auxiliary systems, marine starting, or any application that needs deeper reserve and a stronger cold crank. |
For an importer or private-label brand owner, the framing is the same as the D26 family: these are two SKUs in one case, not two different batteries. You can offer a two-tier D31 lineup — standard and heavy — under one label with one tray fitment, one set of tooling and one logistics footprint.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the “115” battery is larger than the “105” and ordering different trays. It is the same D31 tray.
- Assuming a D31 drops into a D26 vehicle. D31 is ~50 mm longer; it is a different tray family.
- Comparing one brand’s 105D31 CCA against another brand’s 115D31 CCA and concluding a bigger gap than the grade actually implies.
- Ignoring terminal and polarity when swapping one grade for the other.
OEM & private-label note
Dingwei Battery provides OEM and private-label battery programs manufactured by Chengguang Power Tech Co., Ltd. (founded 2002). Both models are available for OEM and private-label programs. Because they share a case, a brand owner can launch a two-tier D31 lineup (standard + heavy) under one label with a single mould and packaging family. Confirm voltage, capacity, CCA basis, terminal type, polarity and label artwork during specification.

FAQ
Is the 115D31 bigger than the 105D31?
No. Both use the JIS D31 case (roughly 305 × 175 × 220 mm; the BCI cross-reference lists 306 × 173 × 225 mm). The 115D31 has more capacity and CCA, not more physical size.
Can I replace a 105D31 with a 115D31?
Usually yes physically, provided terminal type and polarity match. The 115D31 adds reserve and cold-cranking power, which is safe for most heavy SUV, 4WD and marine starting applications — but confirm the terminals first.
Can I replace a 115D31 with a 105D31?
It will fit and start in mild conditions, but it carries less reserve and lower CCA. Under sustained diesel-cranking, winching or deep accessory load it works harder and is not a reliable long-term substitute.
Why do 105D31 CCA figures vary across brands?
Because JIS (−15°C) and SAE/EN (−18°C) are different test methods, and factories build the D31 case to different plate and paste grades. Compare within one standard and one manufacturer only.
The Author's Take
Position: In my view, the 115D31 only earns its price premium when the vehicle genuinely needs the extra cold-cranking margin — for standard duty, the 105D31 is the more honest buy.
Reasoning:
- Both share the D31 tray, so the upgrade is pure capacity and CCA — no fitment benefit.
- Higher CCA means more lead and more weight, and past the point where the engine starts reliably, that margin buys nothing.
- Most buyers over-spec CCA by habit, not by a measured cold-start shortfall.
Disclosure: this is the author's editorial judgment and field experience, not a verified technical claim.
Conclusion
The 105D31 and 115D31 are the same D31 box at two performance grades. The decision is not about size — it is about matching capacity and CCA to the vehicle’s electrical and starting demand, then confirming terminals and polarity. For buyers and brand owners, that turns two apparently different batteries into one flexible platform in the largest standard JIS case.
