H5 vs H6 battery: LN2 vs LN3 — same height, different length

The H5 and H6 are the two smaller members of the DIN/EN “H” family. They share width and height; the H6 is 36 mm longer. That length difference carries a meaningful reserve gap — 60 Ah vs 72 Ah — even though the CCA gap looks modest on paper.

Short answer: H5 and H6 are different lengths (242 vs 278 mm), not interchangeable stock. Both are rated on the same EN −18°C CCA basis, so their CCA is directly comparable. Choose H5 for compact cars and entry start-stop; choose H6 when the tray accepts the length and the vehicle benefits from more reserve.

The H-series: length is the upgrade axis

The whole H family — H5 through H8 — shares one width (175 mm) and one height (190 mm). Only length changes:

The practical consequence: the H5 is the shortest of the modern H family, and moving from H5 to H6 is the most common length upgrade in the range. European platforms often standardize the tray to width and height with an adjustable hold-down, so a compact car specced for H5 can frequently step up to H6 for extra reserve — provided the tray length allows it.

Why the CCA gap understates the real difference

On paper the CCA difference looks small — 600 vs 660 A (reference). The capacity difference, however, is 20%: 60 Ah vs 72 Ah.

This matters because CCA and capacity answer different questions:

  • CCA is about the short, high-current burst that starts a cold engine. Both batteries start a compact car easily in typical conditions.
  • Capacity (Ah) is about how long the battery can support loads when the engine is off or the alternator is not keeping up — start-stop restarts, stoplight accessory draw, parking-lot electronics.

So the real-world difference between H5 and H6 shows up less at the first cold crank and more in reserve endurance under start-stop and accessory load. That is why two batteries with a 60 A CCA gap can behave very differently in a start-stop car. Read more in the capacity vs CCA vs reserve explainer and the CCA guide.

The naming trap: DIN55 and DIN66

Like the rest of the family, the H5 and H6 carry multiple aliases:

The nominal “DIN55” and “DIN66” labels are not the real C20 capacity — the H5 reference is 60 Ah and the H6 reference is 72 Ah. Buyers ordering “a 55 Ah battery” or “a 66 Ah battery” are quoting the label, not the spec. When specifying, name the case reference (H5/LN2 or H6/LN3) and the real Ah and CCA you need.

Which one should you choose?

Choose…When…
H5Compact European cars, entry-level start-stop systems, or any vehicle whose tray length is fixed at 242 mm; cost-sensitive replacement programs.
H6Mid-size cars and SUVs, heavier accessory loads, or a compact car where the tray accepts the longer case and the buyer wants more reserve and start-stop endurance.

For an importer, H5 and H6 are the two most common entry points into the European battery market. They are distinct SKUs — same width and height, different length — so they share packaging and shipping logic but must be stocked as separate lengths.

OEM & private-label note

Dingwei Battery provides OEM and private-label battery programs manufactured by Chengguang Power Tech Co., Ltd. (founded 2002). Both models are available for OEM and private-label programs. A brand owner entering the European market typically launches H5 and H6 first — they cover the highest-volume compact and mid-size platforms — then extends to H7 and H8 for SUVs and premium vehicles. Confirm voltage, capacity, CCA basis, terminal type, polarity and label artwork during specification.

FAQ

Is the H6 bigger than the H5?

Yes — longer. Both are 175 mm wide and 190 mm tall, but the H6 is 278 mm long versus 242 mm for the H5. The extra 36 mm buys more capacity and reserve.

Can I fit an H6 where an H5 was specified?

Only if the tray and hold-down accept the longer case. Many European trays share width and height with an adjustable hold-down, so an upgrade can fit — but confirm the tray length first.

Can I replace an H6 with an H5?

It will fit and start the car in mild conditions, but carries less reserve (60 vs 72 Ah) and lower CCA. In a start-stop or high-accessory application it works harder and is not a reliable long-term substitute.

Is the CCA directly comparable between H5 and H6?

Yes. Both are DIN/EN batteries rated at −18°C, so the CCA numbers (600 vs 660 reference) are on the same test basis — unlike a JIS vs EN cross-comparison.

The Author's Take

Position: In my view, the H6 is the better buy when the tray accepts it — the 20% extra capacity is worth the small price step; if the tray is H5-sized, the H6 is not an upgrade, it simply will not fit.

Reasoning:

  • The H6 is the same family at a longer case, so the decision is tray length before anything else.
  • That extra length buys roughly 20% more capacity and a stronger cold start.
  • Trying to 'upgrade' an H5 tray to an H6 fails on length, not on performance.

Disclosure: this is the author's editorial judgment and field experience, not a verified technical claim.

Conclusion

The H5 and H6 are the same battery family at two lengths. The decision is tray length first, then reserve: the H6 buys 20% more capacity and a stronger cold crank for vehicles that can accept the longer case. Confirmed terminals, polarity and the hold-down, and the rest is specification detail.
